Witch Hazel (Hamamelis) is a small tree or large shrub with four seasons of dynamic character. It provides important winter fashion to the garden with it's unusual and fragrant flowers. In the coldest part of winter, clusters of tiny ribbons (yellow, red or orange) hang in knobs off bare branches and perfume the air with a light sweetness.
In spring and summer, the larger oval green leaves provide architectural interest as the branching creates a detailed vase shape.
Fall begins a spectacular change of leaf color in oranges and reds which eventually drop off revealing the intricate vase shape of Witch Hazel.
It is a slow-growing shrub, up to 15-30 feet tall and 15 feet wide in 10 years. Very little maintenance is required and is diease and pest-free. Well-drained, slightly acidic soil is ideal. Full sun or light shade will provide the most flowers and best fall leaf color.
Witch Hazel is not planted nearly enough for the WOW factor it gives the landscape. We highly recommend this one.
